Assemblywoman Jenne honors St. Lawrence Thunder hockey team in Albany

Assemblywoman Addie A.E. Jenne, D- Theresa, introduced members of the national champion St. Lawrence Thunder AAA 16U hockey team on the floor of the New York State Assembly on Monday.

The state Assembly later passed a resolution introduced by Assemblywoman Jenne congratulating the team on their accomplishment.

The assemblywoman hosted a pizza party for the team in Albany and then players and parents took a tour of the state Capitol before heading to the Assembly floor.

Assemblywoman Jenne said the players were great ambassadors for the North Country.

"I was impressed by their humility and poise. Their ability to win a national championship when they only play together during short periods of time during the long hockey season is a reflection of their superior skill level, knowledge of the game and coaching," Assemblywoman Jenne suggested.

"These players have demonstrated mental and physical toughness during a long season when most of the players were skating against each other in high school games," she added.

"I hope they cherish this national championship and recognize the pride this accomplishment has brought to the North Country," Assemblywoman Jenne said.

"This accomplishment is a demonstration of the talent and work ethic of the players, and I can't wait to see where that takes these young men as they move forward with their hockey careers and lives," she said.

"There were a few other state champions in the Assembly chamber Monday, but I, and the fellow members of the North Country delegation, were proud to host the only national champions," she quipped.

Joined by Assemblymen Bill Jones and Marc Butler, Assemblywoman Jenne met with the players, coaches and parents on the Assembly floor before session.

Assemblyman Jones praised the team for bringing the national title back to the North Country.

“The St. Lawrence Thunder AAA boys' hockey team won an astounding six games in a row, defeating teams from around the country to win this year’s 16U Tier II national championship," he said.

I’m incredibly proud of the hard work and resilience they displayed throughout the season, which ultimately allowed them to capture and bring the title home to the North Country,” Assemblyman Jones added.

State Senator Joseph Griffo and a representative from State Senator Patty Ritchie's office stopped by earlier in day to meet with the players.

St. Lawrence Thunder Coach Mark Goodnow said he was pleased his players were receiving recognition at the state level.

"It's always great to get recognition for the kids. Sometimes kids from the North Country feel they are a little overlooked so today was special. They will remember this day forever," Coach Goodnow said.

"We had a great visit, learned a lot and the kids enjoyed the experience of seeing state government in action," he added.

Assistant Coach Dustin Smith expressed a similar sentiment. "It was great to be able to bring a special group of kids to a special place," he noted.

The Thunder featured players from Brasher Falls, Canton, Clayton, Fort Covington, Massena, Ogdensburg, Parishville, Potsdam, Saranac Lake and West Stockholm.

They include Rico DiMatteo, Brasher Falls; Romano Sergi, Potsdam; Cameron Cartier, Fort Covington; Tommy Bannister, Clayton; Matt Harvey, Fort Covington; Bobby Wells, Canton; Isaac Testani, Ogdensburg; Carter Rose, Brasher Falls; Nate Boak, Canton; Zach Ellsworth, Saranac Lake; Chris Paige, Massena; Robbie Southwick, Massena; Dillon Spinner, Fort Covington; Jacob Brothers, Potsdam; Payton Felix, Parishville; Kaleb Rathbun, West Stockholm; John Mahoney, Canton; Will Varney, Potsdam; and Casey Hooper, Massena.

The North Country skaters started their 6-0 tournament run with preliminary round victories over the New Jersey Bandits (3-1), the Tampa Scorpions (5-1) and the Southern Connecticut Stars (6-1) in the 16-team field.

The St. Lawrence Thunder earned their trip to the national tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Cheektowaga Warriors on March 18 in Amherst at the New York State Tier II 16U championship game. The Thunder edged the Syracuse Blazers 2-1 in double overtime in the state tournament semi-finals.
